Johan Thornqvist Responses

For Johan Thornqvists' response I have gone down the same route as Thornqvist, who takes Photographs of everyday things and places, and do the exact same thing. I went down to Wollaton park and took various Photographs of objects and flowers. The reason I picked the location Wollaton park was because, Thronqvists work revolves around creating his own world inside of the photograph using his illustrations and I felt like the scenery at Wollaton park would spark the creative ideas for the ilustrations that I would like to do over the top of these Photographs. Once I had taken these images, I had to edit them in Photoshop. Thornqvists' Photographs are clearly filtered which adds to the whole outcome of the image, therefore I had a play around with the colour balance and contrast of my Photographs so that it could create the same feel that Thornqvist has in his work.

With these Photographs I wanted to create a more subtle filter/ alteration to the original Photographs that I had taken as I didn't want to overpower the image. These are the examples I have edited with and tried out a few different filters and changes. I think with looking at these, it is obvious that I have edited them, however I feel it is more on the subtle side. The next step that I need to undertake is to create the illustrations that I would place over the top. I believe this will be a challenge for me as the technique Thornqvist has used, I do not have access to the same equipment that he has, therefore I will need to make alterations. I think the easiest and most effective way would be to use the same technique as my other Photographer Ben Heine rather than using a tablet that Thornqvist would usually use to draw straight onto the photograph.

For my final outcomes of these responses. I used the technique of tracing paper to draw on the illustrations. Then, I scanned in the illustrations and placed them over the top of the Photographs. I used Photoshop to use the 'Linear burn' to make the white background of the illustration disappear, leaving just the illustration. I used this technique as the way Johan produces his work, I wasn't able to use as I did not have access to a tablet to use. Even though Thornqvists' method is different from my other Photographers work, I still found a method not used before to complete these responses.

This particular chosen Photograph reminded me of something out of Harry Potter, particularly the prison known as 'Azkaban' therefore, this gave me an idea of what to Illustrate. I have drawn little cages on rough bark, as it represents the dirty conditions in a prison. Along with this I Illustrated a helicopter seen bringing in people to be placed in these cages. For these responses, I created a certain scenario in my head. Johan does not have a specific message within his Photographs, therefore I did not think of a message to go with these, I let my imagination take over instead.
As Johan sometimes creates little villages within his work, I wanted to try and copy and achieve this.  I looked at his original pieces and took inspiration from these to produce it in my own work. Personally I found this more difficult to produce due to the different angles in the Photograph. Ideally a Photograph where the subject is straight would have been easier, as looking back at Thornqvist's work, his subjects are more simple and straight in the composition. There seems to be too much going on within the composition for the Illustration to work.
This composition is a much more simple one compared to the Photograph above, therefore personally as soon as you see this Photograph, the illustrations become much more effective. I used the same idea of creating a village within this Photograph.
